Grocery Prices Need to Fall…the Clock is Ticking

President Trump and his Republican Party have been engaging in some spirited battles with the Democrats and their progressive allies as of late.  To their credit, they seem been winning more than losing and public sentiment appears to be on their side, by and large.  But while tariff wars, blowing up drug boats, arresting illegal aliens in all shapes and forms, mimicking Robert Duvall in militaristic memes, sparring with governors Newsom and Pritzker over crime and punishment, renaming federal departments and firing large portions of their workforce, passing Big Beautiful Bills, and all the other Trumpian adventures our President engages in might spur debate and effectively expose the Democrats for the fools that they are…there is an elephant sitting on the couch in this room.

That elephant is in the form of the high cost of living; grocery prices in particular.  The steps that Trump has taken to improve our economy make good sense.  He is shrinking the size of government, spurring investments that should create revenue and job creation, and seems to be holding inflation rates at bay for the time being.  But even if he manages to stop inflation in its tracks, the plain and simple truth is that the cost of living is too damn high.  If people do not see the price of their groceries come down by next summer, they are not going to be inclined to support the party in charge of the White House and the Congress.  It is that simple.

The economic policies that the Trump Administration is utilizing to lower the cost of living might very well work…over time.  The question is: How much time?  Prices will not be coming down overnight or even over weeks.  It will take several months, perhaps even a year or more, for effective economic policies to impact the daily lives of citizens.  It would be wise indeed for the President and his Party to tone down their rhetoric on many of the issues where their positions are supported by healthy majorities of the public.  There are times when you celebrate the win, move on to the next job, and stop thumping your chest.  Let the American people think for themselves, realize that things are getting better, and draw their own conclusions about which policies they support.  Let people think about the way people are living in California, New York City, Seattle, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Madison, and Chicago under the rule of Democrats.

Trump and his Administration are making a solid effort to bring down prices; but those efforts are getting lost in the shuffle of all the other “flavor of the month” issues that Trump loves to bluster and bandy about.  People need to SEE and HEAR that first off, the President and his officials are aware of the high prices and secondly, they are doing all they can in sensible ways to deal with this problem.  If prices begin to fall in time to influence the 2026 mid-terms, then Republican sailing should be smooth.  But if they stubbornly remain at their high levels and people hear Trump talking about everything but paying the grocery bill, then a lot of the so-called bigger issues are going to take a backseat to the cost of feeding the family.  Fair or not, the party in charge will garner the praise or carry the blame.  The clock is ticking.

Of all the woke and progressive movements that I find troubling in our nation today, there is none more serious than the significant amount of support that Americans hold for Hamas, the radical leaders of Palestine, and their venomous hatred for the Jewish people.  Hamas is pure evil with no redeeming qualities and no hope of redemption.  The Palestinian people, for whatever reason, have chosen to allow their lives to be ruled by this group of brutal terrorists.  There is absolutely no way that a two-state solution will ever lead to a lasting peace in the Middle East.  These realities dictate that Hamas must be destroyed and Palestine must come under the control of new management.  That management should be in the form of Israel and that is becoming more apparent with each passing day.

President Trump has approached the Russia/Ukraine war in a very deliberate and sensible fashion.  He has given both sides multiple opportunities to settle the conflict and one or both of them have repeatedly and stubbornly refused to do so.  Russia started this war.  Only Russia can end this war.  Trump’s dalliance with Putin, no matter how well planned and designed, is obviously not working.  It is time for Trump, along with the apparently-willing European nations that we claim as allies, to drop the hammer on Russia in every way possible to bring it to the negotiating table.  Arm Ukraine to the teeth, including offensive weapons; isolate Russia economically and make them suffer for their intransigence; make it clear to China and India that Russia is not a good horse to be betting on in this international race for global supremacy.  The carrots have not worked.  It is time for the sticks.

Trump Derangement Syndrome is alive and well in the U.S. Senate.  Senate Democrats have clearly chosen to adopt a governing strategy bereft of ideals and policy initiatives in favor of a fever-driven obsession…aka doing all things possible to damage the Trump Administration.  The Republicans that control the Senate should pay attention to how Trump has dealt with the Democrats and stop playing nice with their Senate adversaries.  In today’s political environment, it is critical to maximize the implementation of policy while you control the levers of power; the four years of the Biden Administration are woeful proof of that.  Republicans must trust the American people to recognize the irrational bureaucratic sabotage being waged by the Democrats for what it is…pure spite and malice towards a man that simply cannot defeat.  Do what is necessary and people will support it.

Old fashioned ideals about marriage and children and family are taking a beating these days.  The experiences and wisdom that are held by many of the old heads simply don’t matter much to the last couple of generations.  But like it or not, the family always has been and always will be the bedrock foundation of this country…regardless of who rules Washington, DC.  Both of our political parties have fringe elements within them.  In the case of the Republicans, the radicals are in the wings.  In the case of the Democrats, the radicals are running the show.   What type of future does each of them see for you and your family?

Trump is NOT Literal

Donald Trump has blown a hole in many long-held misconceptions regarding politics and the Executive Branch of our government; but try as he might, there are some truisms that his omnipresence cannot overcome.  One of those is the old saying that “you can’t have it both ways”.  Trump is a chaos agent and as such, he never wants to be held to any type of permanent or consistent rule.  He demands the freedom to think and say this way today and that way tomorrow…rules for thee but not for me.  This is quite simply what he is; one cannot take him on a literal basis.  In his rare honest moments, he has admitted that his rhetoric is not to be taken literally.

This is not to say that this modus operandi doesn’t work…at least for him.  In fact, it has worked quite well for our President as he has undertaken the monumental task of unwinding the devastation brought upon our nation’s government by the Obama/Biden progressive cabal.  It is likely accurate to say that it took something like Trump to bring this liberal lunacy to a halt and begin the process of restoring common sense and reason to America.  But make no mistake about it: Donald Trump seldom means what he says.

He blusters and bluffs.  He will ask for a yard when he will readily settle for two feet.  He will make outrageous claims with a straight face and then laugh at you for believing him.  He is a serious man who utilizes unserious methods.  It is remarkable that after all we have seen from this man, there are still people who hold him up as a model of truth and sincerity.  That is not what he is.  We can credit the man for what he has accomplished, but it is a false argument to qualitatively judge his methods based on his results.

This fair criticism of Trump is not meant to demean him or demonize his ideals.  It is just an observation of the man and his ways.  MAGA folks are by and large driven by a healthy dose of common sense, reason, and healthy patriotism.  Donald Trump has been…and remains…a historical leader for their cause.  But it is unbecoming for them to laud the man himself with the same glory directed towards his record.  Donald Trump is not a saint; but our nation didn’t need a saint at this point in time or place.

Whether it is tariffs, constitutional authorities, inflammatory political rhetoric, or some other arena of federal operation, Trump is pushing the limits beyond what we have known in order to first create a discussion about the issues and then, to ascertain exactly what he can get by with.

While our constitution places heavy emphasis on the checks and balances that exist between our three co-equal branches of government in regards to domestic matters, it is equally clear that by and large, our Chief Executive is in charge of America’s foreign policy.  Trump has properly embraced this obligation and relishes the role of the planet’s most powerful leader.

No politician in my lifetime has been subjected to more treachery than Donald Trump.  Any person having experienced what Trump has dealt with would be fully justified in wanting to even old scores upon regaining the upper hand on his tormentors.  Having said that, the settling could be done in perhaps a bit less flamboyant fashion, with a nod towards raising the moral and ethical standards previously flaunted by his enemies.

The battle for the minds of our future generations is well begun and it is one that must be embraced by all citizens of our nation.  Even in rural America, the degree to which radical progressives are operating within the administration of our country’s education system is astounding.  This fight for the proper education and welfare of our nation’s youth must be fought on a daily basis and done so with an air of acute vigilance.  Failure to do so will result in an insidious rot continuing to spread throughout our schools and universities.  The groups of zealots who have taken control of our education establishment are drunk with power and control…they will not go quietly into the good night.

Crime and justice is a very prescient subject sweeping across our country.  As presented in the opening paragraphs of this piece, Trump has done a very good thing bringing this issue to the top of the hit list.  After all, it is undeniably one of the fundamental responsibilities of government.

The ongoing discussion about the merits of Democrat government versus Republican government is raging…as it should be.  This is why we have elections.  Elections have consequences.  We get the government we deserve.  Americans had best think hard about how they vote…and our political parties need to think hard about how they operate and what they stand for.

I love a good movie; to me, it is one of life’s great pleasures.  No matter how illogical, factually incorrect, sappy, or over-the-top…when a movie works, it is nothing short of magical.  Some time back, I went to see the premier of Top Gun/Maverick with my grandson at a local theatre.  It was great.  The story, the action, the characters…they all came together in a way that literally brought those in the theatre to their feet cheering.  And then, to top it off, the closing theme music was spot on and put a cherry on top of the whole deal.  If you have not seen this movie, check it out.  If you haven’t seen for a while, check it out again.  It’s that good.  Here is the closing musical theme, performed by a remarkably talented lady.  The first link is a performance preceding the Super Bowl and highlights the singer’s talent in a live setting.  The second is the official music video from the movie and will give you sense of the cinematic experience.  Great stuff!

Summertime State of Play

The chess match between Trump and Putin continues; the Fed hints at a rate cut; Texas redraws their district lines; and the military is gearing up for police work.  Our world just keeps on spinning.

Here in Kentucky, life is good.  Everything we buy just keeps getting more expensive, but I am selling calves at the highest price ever.  The weather has backed down from the mid-90s with thick humidity to the mid-to-high eighties and cool breezes.  We are mighty dry, but it always seems to rain one day before it’s too late and pasture/crops do not yet appear to be suffering much.  But…it had better rain soon.

I’ve been seeing more deer and turkey this spring and early summer than normal; that should bode well for the upcoming hunting seasons.  Our lakes are back to summer pool levels following our spring floods and lake traffic, both fishing and pleasure, seem to be picking up a bit.  We just might be lining up for a big-time Labor Day weekend.  Here in my small-town community, we are going through a major traffic change where conventional intersections with traffic lights are being selectively replaced by roundabouts.  At first blush, I was reluctant to endorse this change…but after having seen them in action, I believe the state transportation department knows what they’re doing.  They work pretty well.  Old heads can adapt to new ideas.

As both national political parties begin to seriously engage in their mid-term election posturing, the news reports seem to have taken on a rather dull and repetitive tone.  It is so predictable: Trump is full of blustering rhetoric and the Democrats are opposed to anything associated with Trump.  To me, the penultimate political question in play is the speculation about the 2026 mid-terms.  Here in Kentucky, we will be electing a U.S. Senator to replace Mitch McConnell.  That race is shaping up to be an expensive proposition with two known candidates and one outsider on the Republican side and the door still open for a Democrat candidate to walk through.  To me, the far bigger issue is the outcome of the upcoming House races.  I do believe Trump will be after Kentucky Republican Representative Thomas Massie’s scalp next year.  Another point of interest for me is the mainstream media’s continuing fascination with our sitting governor’s prospects in the next presidential election.  Andy Beshear is a horse’s ass and he resides in our state mansion due largely to his daddy and the incompetence of the state Republican Party, not because of any redeeming qualities he might possess.  The media folks need to do some homework.

But Kentucky is small stuff compared to the bigger picture.  If Donald Trump is going to continue his momentum towards accomplishing his agenda, it is absolutely critical that the Republicans maintain control not only of the Senate…which appears to be a fairly safe bet at this point, but also of the House…which is not a safe bet at all.  If we consider two things, it becomes rather obvious how important Congressional control is for Trump.  First off, just look at the trouble the Democrats and their progressive allies in the courts, academia, and the media have managed to stir up thus far notwithstanding their minority positions.  Imagine what they will do if they are in control of the House.  It will no doubt be a replay of the constant “Get Trump Any Way You Can” efforts that were so prevalent in his first term.  With House control, the Democrats should have no trouble not only attacking Trump on all sides, but also bringing any semblance of federal legislating to a screeching halt.

Secondly, if Republicans can maintain Congressional control, they stand a decent chance of setting up fairly good prospects for Trump’s successor.  That would mean a continuation, by and large, of Trump’s policies and priorities for another four-to-eight years.  That would certainly be sufficient time to change the landscape of American politics and shift the fundamental advantage back to the Republican side.  This continuation of the Trump doctrines would also just precede the upcoming 2030 census, which should favor the Republican Party in a big way.  All things considered…a good 2026 mid-term for the Republicans could set the stage for long-term control of our federal government by their party.

Now this all assumes, of course, that the Trump policies are effective and we find our nation at peace with a good economy.  Any way you look at it, there is a better chance of that with a Republican majority in Congress than we’d have with a divided government over Trump’s last two years in office.  But there is something about the current political climate that puzzles me and I cannot draw a bead on it.  With the Democrat Party on as low a limb as I’ve seen them in decades, you would think that national party identification would be dramatically in favor of the Republican Party.  It is not.  Yes…there are many signs that it is moving in that direction; but it’s not there yet.  As crazy as the Democrats have become in their actions, ideas, and priorities…you would think that the Republicans, or any alternative for that matter, would be light years ahead on favorability polling.  That does not seem to be the case.

Whether it’s Trump Derangement Syndrome, a much larger slice of the voting public identifying as more progressive than we might think, or simply people lying to pollsters…the party identification and favorability numbers that I read still support the fact that politically, we remain a much divided nation.  Hardcore numbers for each party seem to reside in the 40-45 percent range while the Independents and moderates fill in the gap between.  I have to pose the questions: Are there really that many crazy people out there who truly support the Democrats these days?  Do the urban pockets of Democrat strength pose sufficient size to offset the rural tilt towards the Republicans?  My common sense tells me that there is no way under heaven that 45 percent of voters would support what we are seeing from the Democrat Party these days; but the numbers do not appear to support that notion.  If this is true, then the upcoming mid-term elections for House control are surely up in the air.  We must always remember that House races are localized to a county or a small group of counties; they are not statewide and they are typically not nationalized.

As rapidly as Donald Trump has managed to reverse the terrible direction our nation was taking in so many ways, all of that progress…and promise…could come to an abrupt halt if the Democrats take back control of the House in 2026.  There are many “shiny object” balls being juggled at this time, but the one we should keep our eyes on is the one labeled “2026 Mid-Terms”.

Consider, if you will, some of the situations we find ourselves in as we approach the mid-term elections…

By the time November rolls around in 2026, will voters remember the realities of the Biden Administration or will they be caught up in the madness of “no holds barred electioneering”?  Will common sense and reason prevail at the ballot box or will voters revert to those stubborn “party identification” numbers I referenced earlier?  Given the desperation level we have witnessed from the Democrats over the last six months and the incredible advancements in AI and its possible applications towards political campaigns, we are surely heading towards a national election season like none we have witnessed before.

Pray for Peace in Ukraine

After three years of senseless killing, there is a glimmer of hope for peace in the Russia/Ukraine war.  Partisanship aside, we can all simply hope and pray that an agreement can be reached that will bring the carnage to an end.

History appears to tell us that Vladimir Putin is a ruthless autocrat who is motivated solely by his thirst for power, domination, and restoration of the old USSR.  He sees Ukraine as a cornerstone to that quest.  It is whimsy to credit him with any degree of empathy, compassion, or concern for his own people.  The elephant in this discussion room is that Russia started this conflict by invading Ukraine and only power, leverage, and blunt force will persuade Russia to negotiate a settlement.  I am hopeful that Donald Trump understands this; I believe he does.

Volodymir Zelenskyy understandably wants the Russian presence removed from any and all Ukrainian territory that they have taken control of since the beginning of this war.  That is not going to happen.  It is simply not reasonable to expect that Russia will voluntarily abandon the Ukrainian territory that it has conquered and now controls.  Ukraine cannot push them out or they would have already done so.  The European nations/NATO and the USA will not commit to fighting door to door, night and day, bathed in blood, to remove the Russians from these areas.  What might have been possible three years ago is now impossible.

Somewhere in between these two stated convictions lies a settlement that will bring the senseless killing to a halt, cede some Ukrainian territory to Russia, guarantee the ongoing sovereignty of Ukraine, and somehow punish Russia for their reckless ambitions.  Balancing all of those huge concerns on the head of a pin is the task set before President Trump.  He can put Putin and Zelenskyy at the same table and he can use the “carrots and sticks” at his disposal to push them towards agreement; but he cannot make the peace between them.  Only they can do that.  And if they refuse to do that now, at this point in history, then only bad outcomes are on the horizon….some being worse than others.

The economy appears to be gathering momentum, the government is actually beginning to show signs of shrinkage, and we have a secure southern border that will now allow all involved to consider national immigration policy reform.  All things considered, the possibilities are very encouraging.

The Diversity/Equity/Inclusion curse that was introduced to our nation by Obama and nourished under the Biden Administration has hopefully reached a point where its ambition has clearly extended beyond its reach, the progressive lunacy behind it has been exposed for the fraud that it is, and it is being pushed back into its dark recesses by a fed up populace being led by the Trump Administration.  But make no mistake about it: it has become deeply rooted in our culture and society and it will not go quietly into the night.  It must continue to be recognized, called out, and held accountable for its foolishness and the efforts to eliminate it must continue unabated.

Just as DEI must be vigilantly opposed, so must the corruption in the progressive elements of the Democrat Party and their disciples in the mainstream media, academia, and intelligentsia.  Though they have taken some hits…their hypocrisy, ruthlessness, insatiable ambition for power and control, and persuasive skills remain healthy and vital.  They must be defeated politically and their defeats must be constantly repeated.
