Donald Trump thrives on controversy. He encourages it, he revels in it, and he is good at playing that game. His bombastic rhetorical style and past CEO/private enterprise management style has been honed over a lifetime of good fortune, entitlement, hard work, and experience. He is a gifted man in many ways who was born on third base. He forgets sometimes that he did not hit a triple to get there.
Trump
now sits at a point in his tenure as President where he has three years
remaining to accomplish his plans, dreams, and goals for himself and this
nation. He oftentimes seems to make
things much more difficult than necessary, but perhaps that is what it takes to
get the job done. The jury is still out on that question. Regardless of that consideration, the ticking
clock on his second term will not be stilled and time is of the essence; both
for Trump and America.
The
Trump Administration, in cooperation with Congress, has put in place some
fundamental changes and plans that have a very good chance of improving the
overall quality of life in America, improving our national security, and
achieving some positive global changes across this planet. But those plans need to be finished or well
on their way to completion before he leaves office in January of 2029. It is true that there might well be a
Republican president that follows Trump who will continue the general thrust of
his policies; but that is not a sure thing and at best, it is a very complex
issue. Donald Trump needs to be laser
focused on getting his plans in place
now…today…and before he leaves the
White House.
I
would submit that if he continues
being the Donald Trump we have come to know and expect over his five years as
President, it is unlikely that the major
portion of his policy initiatives will come to fruition. The chaos that accompanies his standard
operating processes simply is not conducive to getting the job done within that
time frame. He may enjoy doing it and he
may even realize a high degree of success with it; but it is not very efficient in a productive sense. If he is to leave this nation and the Chief
Executive position in the condition he desires, he needs to immediately begin adjusting his management style to make
that happen. No one person…not in government nor the private sector nor any other
nation on earth…is a position to achieve that.
Only Donald Trump can do it.
In
recent weeks, there are some fleeting indications that perhaps this diminishing
window of opportunity is dawning on Trump.
He has shown some strategic flexibility in his foreign policy
initiatives regarding Iran, Greenland, Venezuela, NATO, and China/Russia. He has reached out to Democrat leaders Chuck
Schumer and Elizabeth Warren. He is
opening dialogue and interaction with private sector movers and shakers in an
effort to leverage government assets with private sector innovation and experience. If in fact this indicates a newfound
awareness of the sands sliding through the hourglass, it is a welcome
happenstance.
Trump
has chosen some duds as Administration appointees…especially his trophy women
in the DOJ. But he has also selected some outstanding people in other areas that
are bringing a refreshing new perspective to making government function in an
improved fashion. If Trump can
manage to focus less on the cameras and media and focus more on using his power
for constructive action, there is no limit to what he might accomplish for this
nation, this world, and his own historical legacy.
How
great would it be for Trump to simply put the main players from the private and
public sectors in a room together, make a brief personal appearance to get the
party started, and then leave it to those remaining to work out actual plans of
action to solve some of the troubling issues facing our nation today? While it is true that you cannot negotiate
with idiots, that problem can be mitigated by putting the right people in the
room to begin with…and Trump would
control that dynamic. Donald Trump
has the personal traits and the practical authority to make this a
reality. He can choose to finish out his
term as President with contentious conflict and chaos…or…he can reach for the
brass ring, shoot for the moon, and use his leadership to possibly solve some fundamental problems facing Americans today.
What
might an approach like this achieve for issues like national immigration
policy, national health insurance, national education policy, federal spending,
and social security reform? Pick the
right people…reasonable people with integrity,
who are interested in results and not attention. Get them together and depart to your other
presidential duties; lock the door and demand a finished product. What happens next? Maybe nothing. But then again…perhaps something miraculous. I
would love to see my President competing on the field of accomplishment rather
than the field of confrontation. He can do this…if only he will.
