America’s voters have spoken and come January of 2027, the government of our nation will change in significant ways. The most significant change will be the fact that President Trump will now have to contend with “numerically-strong but not veto-proof” Democrat control in the House and Senate. How unified and coordinated that Democrat control will be is a very pertinent question. They will hound him and his Administration till the cows come home. No Trump nominees will receive Senate confirmation…including Supreme Court justices. No legislation favored by the President will pass through Congress. Trump will rule by Executive Orders and, if necessary, his presidential veto. It is also relevant to question how unified the Republicans will be in their opposition to Democrat control. That will be required to sustain presidential vetoes. Trump was never really able to get along with the Republicans in Congress. Who knows…he might be better able to get along with Democrats.
Through
his arrogance and conceit, he has squandered a fundamentally-solid economy, the
legal and intelligent management of immigration, a perfectly-defensible foreign
policy, a rational and smart energy policy, a serious reduction in the size and
overreach of our federal government, and a full host of social issues favored
by a majority (not so sure now) of
Americans. His insistence on inserting
his preferred candidates into various
races…at the expense of more deserving
and qualified candidates…has proven to be costly beyond measure. He has sacrificed the current and potential-future
prospects of his party in a blustering, self-aggrandizing fashion and will now
reap the whirlwind of those actions. The problem is that even though Trump is
the fool who invited the deluge in…the entire nation will now have to contend
with its potentially-disastrous effects.
Just
as it is with all of us, pride goeth
before the fall. It seems very
unlikely that the Trumpian-Phoenix will ever again rise from these ashes. The story of the next two years has not yet
been written, but the story of the last two years is now in the books. In my humble opinion, it is a story of both
great achievements accomplished and tremendous opportunity lost. Donald Trump may choose to accept his licking
and do the work necessary to finish out his presidency as respectfully and
productively as possible; seeking to polish his legacy to the fullest
extent. Who knows, he may surprisingly
discover the greatly underestimated power of humility. It will be a terrible debacle if he yields to
the great temptation of crawling down into the inevitable political mud that
will be spread about him in the coming months.
The
political cards have now been dealt for the balance of the Trump Administration. The Republican Party must come to terms with
its resounding defeat. One can only hope
that they can adopt the policy successes of Donald Trump and eject his personal
excesses that have wrecked their political train. Bereft of new policy initiatives or specific
legislative ideals, the Democrats have ridden an anti-Trump wave of emotion to
a new-found position of political power and influence. What they choose to do with this authority
will be one of the primary consequential factors as we move into the 2028
general elections and all the dynamics contained therein. Just as the Republicans had their Tea Party
moment…the Democrats will now have their DSA moment. Buckle up folks. The next two years are going to be one…wild…ride.
