The Iran conflict/war is the proverbial bubble that is about to burst. As we sit here today, the dynamics involved appear to be reaching a critical mass that will result in a (hopefully) final, sweeping military action by American and Israeli forces against the IRGC-controlled (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) government of Iran.
When giving Trump credit for anything, the best you can do is be second in line behind him. It is so easy to overlook the better qualities and actions of President Trump due to his personal and rhetorical bluster. But there can be no denying that he has taken every possible opportunity to reach a negotiated settlement in this conflict; without posing ridiculous and unreasonable terms. Although he believes in the old adage of peace through strength, he clearly prefers peace over conflict. Alas, at end of the day, the simple reality is that you cannot negotiate in good faith with maniacal zealots…and that is precisely what the IRGC is.
History
certainly appears to indicate that President Obama believed not only in
balancing the game board between Muslims and Jews, he quite literally tilted
the board in favor of the Muslims. He might
not be wholly anti-Semitic, but he comes pretty damn close to it. His pandering and appeasing approach to
IRGC-ruled Iran enabled it to reach a point of nuclear capability that is
now…and should be forever…absolutely unacceptable.
Iran
has gained a somewhat limited but clearly substantial ability to inflict terror
not only on their own people, but on our
nation and their neighboring countries as well. They have demonstrated their obvious intent to
not only use their power to promote terror and violence, but to literally
spread their radical form of faith throughout the entire planet. Tolerance
is not one of their guiding principles. Any
reasonable assessment of their threat level to the civilized world must reach
the conclusion that they have to be stopped before gaining nuclear military capabilities.
You may take issue with how President Trump is trying to stop them; but
a rational person cannot take issue with the fact that they have to be stopped.
The
hammer of awesome military might and superiority is currently raised above the
heads of the IRGC. As they diddle and
dawdle about this or that in the ongoing cease-fire negotiations, the clock is
ticking and the arm holding the hammer aloft is becoming weary and impatient. In lieu of some miracle occurring that
results in an internal removal of the IRGC from power in Iran, it is inevitable
that the hammer will soon fall. Once
that happens…Iran, the Middle East, America, Israel, NATO, China, Russia…all will
arrive simultaneously at a point of eternal significance. Where do we go from here? How do we pick up the pieces of this tragic
event? What is the best future for all
involved?
From
the inception of this conflict, President Trump has been clear and consistent
about his goals in this action. In no
uncertain terms, he stated that Iran could not continue to be a hostile and
terroristic threat to the civilized world, that they could not obtain a nuclear
bomb capability, and they must reform their government to not only become
better neighbors in their region…but to treat their own people with compassion,
respect, dignity, and decency. Even
though he has consistently advocated for it, at no time has President Trump
attempted to foist regime change or
democracy on Iran. He has plainly
declared that this is a matter to be determined by the Iranian people. Again…this principled and wise decision by
Trump is one for which he gets little, if any, credit.
Let
us hope and pray that once, as expected,
the military conflict reengages…it will be brief, effective, and surgical. We can all look forward to the time when all
of our troops and material return home.
The Middle East…and the entire world…yearn for a time of peace so that
their many nations can coexist and prosper for the benefit of their people;
practicing their governments and faiths in the fashion that they choose. I believe this ideal is what spurred
President Trump to move as he has. I
believe he should be honored and respected for having the courage to take this
action; an action that was not without substantial personal and political
risks. Will he receive that
credit? We will see…the ending is
everything.

As
both national parties seek their next ordained leader, both are subject to the
tumultuous internal conflicts that are part and parcel of such a process. But in this aspect of the political game,
there is a clear distinction between the two.
Even though he is a lame-duck, the Republicans have a clear leader that
essentially controls his party; and the party awaits his public expressions of
exactly who and what the Republican Party should be about beginning in January
of 2029. On the other hand, having lost
the last national presidential election, the Democrat Party is still seeking a
clear and majority-favored individual to assume the mantle of party
leadership.
Just
as the Republicans behaved following President Trump’s loss to Joe Biden…the
Democrats are not only afflicted by chaos, they are subject to a quite serious
conflict between the progressive elements in the party and the more moderate
liberal elements in their party. But
unlike the Republicans’ dilemma following their defeat, the Democrats do not
have a recognized individual (ala Trump) seeking to assume the leadership
position. They will eventually find that
person. How they do it will certainly be
entertaining to follow and entirely unpredictable in its conclusion. This is the environment in which that
decision will be made.

I
am not sure that there has been a more consequential mid-term election cycle
than the one we will see this fall. As
of today, it is a crap shoot and impossible to predict with any
uncertainty. This is the environment
surrounding that outcome.
