Even though individual legal cases might be complex beyond description, justice should be a fairly simple concept. Laws should be clear, concise, and well considered. They should be administered in a fair and equitable fashion. The speed at which the law advances should be as expeditious as is responsibly possible. The consequences of criminal behavior should be commensurate to the crimes and accountability should be swift, transparent, and consistent.
That
is NOT where we are in America
today. There is one form of justice for
the rich and powerful and another form of justice for everyone else. Political considerations commonly inject
themselves into our court systems from top to bottom. Cases drag on for years with no resolution
and many times, it is impossible to ascertain the logic surrounding the crime
vs. punishment dynamic.
Somehow
or another, the Judicial branch of our government must regain its integrity and
non-biased character and begin to mete out the law with the balanced scales and
the blindfold of the famous icon Lady Justice.
A central element in this transformation must be the depoliticizing of
the Department of Justice (DOJ). The DOJ is a hot mess, full of corruption and
abuse, and it has become a negative
icon in much the same sense as the aforementioned Lady Justice is a positive icon.
The
DOJ, the Deep State elements of our
government, the mainstream media, the rogue and autocratic elements of
presidential Administrations, and the ideologues posing as Federal Judges have
all conspired to create a byzantine system that favors those in power at the
expense of all others. Any possible
change is going to require a remarkable infusion of character in all three
branches of our government. That is a
very tall order indeed.
