The Summer Rush Ebbs and We Remain So Hard to Please

As a few leaves begin to dry up and fall, there are hints of fall in the air; we are easing into my favorite time of the year in Kentucky.  It has been a good year for rural folk in my part of this world.  We’ve had one of the best gardens in years.  Green beans and tomatoes have been great; squash and cucumbers did just fine; and we even snuck some cantaloupes and watermelons past the critters.

There has been good pasture all year long and it remains that way as we move into late summer.   A good second-cutting of hay has been realized by most and cattle prices are the best they’ve been in several years.  The corn crop looks real good and the soybeans are alright, but somewhat spotty.  The grain markets look solid at this point in time and I believe the soybeans can deliver a good yield as long as we don’t get an early frost.  With the increased price of inputs we are dealing with these days, it is hard to say that increased market prices will translate directly into increased profits but…time will tell.  Hope springs eternal.

It was a strange year for the fruits.  It looks like we’re going to have a good grape crop in the next few weeks.  We did not have any pears, peaches, plums, or apples due to a late frost this spring.  I just picked the buckeyes this week; they did quite well this year.  The nut crops seem to have done real well and I have seen more turkey and deer than I have in a while.  It seems like there are many more poults than in recent years and I’ve noticed more young bucks than normal.

Even with the dry spell we are currently in with a string of high temperatures to go with it, everything is holding up nicely.  I suppose the adequate and consistent rains we have received all year long have built up our ground water and even though the humidity has been hard to live with during these hot days, it has put a heavy dew on in the mornings and that moisture has helped us along.  All things considered, we have had a fine year and as folks begin to look towards the fall harvest and winter months ahead, there is much to celebrate and be thankful for in the middle part of Kentucky these days.  God is good.

The contentment we have gained from a bountiful year has apparently not carried over to our political world.  The Democrats seem to have realized that they have no viable presidential option other than to prop Biden up for another run.  The Republicans meanwhile continue to be the party of Trump…the Teflon Don…he of the many indictments.

You know, after the last three presidents we have had…you would think that the last thing in the world voters would desire would be another candidate bringing an excess of drama into the presidency.  But with the Biden Family Enterprise issue continuing to expand and Trump’s insistence on re-litigating the 2020 election, it appears that Americans are much more interested in theatrics and intrigue than they are in good, old-fashioned, competent and boring government that works for the people.

After the first Republican presidential candidate debate, my conclusion is that of the eight people on the stage, you could acquire a solid President and most of an outstanding Cabinet that could begin the critical mission of setting this country back in order.  But it seems that the conservative critics, even the ones I have high regards for, tend to be distracted by the sound bite, theatric-enhanced, gotcha moments rather than the simple and boring statements of policies and ideas.  Here is what seems to interest them: Who did Christie go after?  Wasn’t Vivek something…good or bad?  Pence is a good man, but there’s no there there.  And DeSantis …he is so scripted and dry; where is his sense of humor?

It painfully reflects the current state of our journalistic community that two of the primary questions posed by the moderators dealt with the current flavor du jour protest anthem and the burning issue of UFOs.  Combine this in-depth questioning with the sophomoric application of seeking candidate responses by “raising your hands” and you wonder who is planning these debates anyway.  We are electing a President; not a fraternity or sorority leader.  We are seeking good government and solid policy ideals; not flimsy notions that sound good but have no value in real practice.

We don’t need characters and flamboyant personalities; we need reliable, intelligent, and reasonable leaders who will tell us the truth and tackle the difficult issues that plague our nation.  Let’s hope this campaign gets better real soon.

On to the news……..

Our national education system continues to dumb itself down in an effort to maximize diversity, equity, and inclusion while minimizing practical and fundamental learning of necessary skills and abilities.  We are doing our children an historical disservice by allowing this ineptitude to continue.

Our children would be far better served with increased emphasis on reading, writing, and arithmetic and less emphasis on stuff like this next link.  These numbers are shocking and notice how they started spiking with the entrance of the Biden Administration.  In the view of many liberals, gender affirming surgery on children is akin to a bad tattoo on a binge drinking night out.  It is NOT the same.  A long sleeve or high collar will not rectify a young life being destroyed.

The Republicans are beginning in earnest the process of selecting their next presidential candidate.  Eight contestants showed up for their first debate and one deemed it beneath himself to compete for the nomination.  Opinions regarding the recent debate vary, but one thing is for certain:  Any ONE of these people would be a great improvement over our current Chief Executive.

Let’s consider the Republican process…

Too Damn Many Cars

Let’s talk a bit about climate change.  Is the climate changing?  Of course it is.  It has been changing from Day 1 and that is not going to change.  Evolution is an integral part of nature and that will continue.  The real question is: To what degree does humanity impact that change?

It is a tribute to the monumental conceit and arrogance of the human animal that some of us actually believe that we can control climate change.  We cannot.  We are grains of sand upon the beach of the universe.   No doubt, we can influence climate change; but the amount of that influence is debatable.  The single most important thing that we can do in order to make our approach to climate change reasonable is to apply some common sense to our actions.  Can we do a better job at being good stewards of the marvelous planet the Good Lord has given us?  Of course we can!  But just because a practice or a so-called solution looks good on paper or makes a great video sound bite does not mean it is a practical and effective step to take towards addressing the adverse effects of climate change.  It is a well known fact that when it comes to government actions, many times the cure is worse than the disease.  A common sense approach to climate change means we pick and choose our remedies, select them with forethought and deliberation, rely on those among us who have expertise in the fields we select, and carefully consider the consequences…both pro and con…of our actions before jamming new policies down the throats of our citizenry.

Man...we sure do love our cars, but we have too many cars in America.  Whether you live in rural America as I do or live in Chicago, Nashville, New York, or Los Angeles…traffic congestion is an issue that we all deal with.  It is simply a matter of degree.  And what is the most glaringly frustrating thing about traffic congestion?  It is the fact that the vast majority of personal vehicles on the road are occupied by a single person.   In many ways, the freedom of mobility that our private vehicles provide to us is our independence in a microcosm.  Our personal vehicles are personal, but the people and businesses that deal with the transportation of goods and material in our country are governed by efficiency, effectiveness, and a cost/benefit metric.  This is what should drive the movement of people in the United States.

The foolish notion that we can change over from internal combustion to electric vehicles (EVs) overnight is the typical naïve attitude of many green advocates.   Even before we have adequately considered the cost/benefit metric of EVs, people in positions of power and authority have leapt to the conclusion that in a perfect world, EVs would be so much better than internal combustion vehicles.  Guess what?  We do not exist in a perfect world.

There are situations where personal transportation demands are repetitive, short-range, and may in many respects lend themselves to the unique qualities of EVs.  Urban environments provide a rich opportunity for this application.  On the other hand, the needs of personal transportation and equipment usage in rural America pose many obstacles to the use of EVs.  For instance, it is patently ridiculous to broadly apply the utilization of EVs to agricultural production.  It took forever to get good internet service to many parts of rural America and that battle continues; the challenges of providing an effective charging network for EVs would dwarf this problem.  We must carefully select where and how we apply EV technology and to the greatest extent possible, let the marketplace and consumer demands drive those efforts.

I work part-time for a multifamily housing developer and a part of my job is to review market studies for the potential project sites.  The market studies thoroughly dissect the environmental/demographic aspects of the potential locations and their geographical subjects  range from rural communities of 5-10 thousand folks up to urban areas of well over half-a-million residents.  Part of the market study deals with how workers travel to and from their jobs; the mode of transportation they employ.  It never ceases to amaze me how few people in our country use public transportation.  It is one of the most under-utilized aspects of our nation today.

I have no doubt that one of the best potential options for improving our climate is engineering an increase in the use of public transportation.  Think about that the next time you are stuck in traffic or flying up the interstate.  Look around you and notice how many people are in each of the individual vehicles that surround you.  The next time you are in town and passing through car dealer row, look how many vehicles are on the used and new car lots.  You want to improve the climate?  Expand public transit; make it affordable and reliable; make it safe and sanitary; and make it readily accessible.  That would be an honest effort to reduce the number of cars that populate our countryside and a significant step towards addressing climate improvement.

I honestly believe that at some point in the future…well after I am in the ground…there will be scenes across our national landscape of an apocalyptic nature that depicts acres and acres of decrepit, decaying, and abandoned wind turbines littering the fields.  In dairy sections of rural America, there are structures known as blue monuments.  These are steel structures built on dairy farms to store and process silage used for feeding the dairy cattle.  As the dairy industry has moved towards vertical integration and become an industry of fewer and larger operations nationwide, these hulking structures can be found abandoned at many farm sites all across the country.  They have become obsolete due to industry evolution.  It costs more to dismantle them than the benefit gained from their removal and they simply stand there…rusting down and blighting the landscape.

That is what will become of many wind farms that have been thrown up without deliberation or forethought to the consequences of the action.  Tens of thousands of acres of our nation’s most productive farmland has been taken out of production so that endless monuments of steel, wire, and propeller blades can litter the land and destroy not only the aesthetics, but also the wildlife.  How is the food product that was once produced on that land now being replaced?  Pay attention to these wind farms… notice how many of the units are turning, how often they turn, and how fast they turn.  What happens to them when the government subsidies that birthed them go away and they must rely on their cost/benefit metric to survive?  There will be no subsidy to tear them down and restore the land.  These will be the new blue monuments.  And you lucky folks on the coasts of New England or California…who have had your seascapes infected by these wind farms…yeah, you thought the occasional oil rig was a terrible sight?  Man, are you in for a shock.

We can live cleaner…we can treat our planet with a higher degree of respect.  We can be good stewards of this world that God has given us.  But we can also employ a practical approach to how we live and the methods we apply in that effort.  We must cease living in a fantasy land of easy solutions to climate change that look good on paper but miserably flunk the common sense exam.  We need to take a deliberate, intelligent, expansive, selective, and immediate approach to keeping our environment intact, healthy, productive, and safe for future generations.  Before we jump into the deep end of the pool, we must consider that which lies beneath the surface.

On to the news………………

Our national education crisis continues unabated, with little indication of positive moves towards improvement.  Liberal-controlled teacher and administrator unions, along with radical school boards, are continuing to push their woke agendas while ignoring their primary function of fundamental education.  This will not stop until parents stand up for their children, re-assert their rights as the financiers of public education, and return our education system to some form of an institution that be relied upon to prepare our youth for the myriad challenges of future leadership.  There must be some form of accountability for the foolish decisions and actions that are being taken.

It is truly sad to watch our pathetic and incompetent President continue his public displays of having no functionality. https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/something-is-still-wrong-with-the-president/  We can only continue to hope that our nation’s constitutional fabric is sufficiently strong enough to survive a dysfunctional government at all levels and simultaneously have a nincompoop as our Chief Executive.  Unfortunately, the same and forgiving margin of error that exists for domestic policy is not present for foreign policy.  The consequences for foolish American international relations can be deadly and costly beyond comprehension.  As I have repeatedly stated…these are very dangerous times we live in and the leadership vacuum we now have only exacerbates that risk.

Likely the most obvious victim of the meritocracy erosion we are seeing in all aspects of our culture and society is the plain and simple loss of competence from the people that we rely on to keep the trains running, keep the lights on, and keep the bills paid.  I don’t believe that any administration in the history of our country has promoted more incompetence in government administration than the Biden Administration.  In the name of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion…Biden has populated our government from top to bottom with ideologues that are not only incapable of performing their assigned duties and responsibilities…they don’t even care about making the attempt.

Not a week goes by without seeing some high-ranking government official holding a press conference and exhibiting an alarming amount of cluelessness about that which they are discussing.  I have no problem with a reasonable patronage system; in the political arena, to the victor goes the spoils.  But for heaven’s sake…when you pick a player from your team to reward, at least pick someone who is qualified to do the job you picked them for.

Donald Trump and the DOJ: Two Bad Jokes

Unfortunately, the joke is on us…and they both continue to dominate the headlines.  Let’s look at Trump first.  Simply put…a man who has an affair with a porn star while his wife is home with an infant child; a man who continues to hoard classified documents even after law enforcement tells him to stop; a man who attempts to pervert our Constitution in order to overturn an election he has lost; and finally…a man who pays his foolishly-incurred legal bills with campaign contributions made to him by his supporters…THIS is not the man who should be president of our nation.

One can understandably admire Trump’s gunslinger skills…his abilities to turn attacks into counter-attacks…the way he redirects criticisms, both illegitimate and legitimate, back at his opponents.  These aspects of Trump make him a formidable political opponent; but they do not translate that well to the qualities we should desire in our Chief Executive.  Whether or not Trump’s accusations about the election being stolen from him are righteous, it is crystal clear that the man is obsessed with that notion.  It is equally reasonable to assume that if he were to be re-elected president, he would spend an extraordinary amount of time and resource on that issue in a disruptive and wasteful fashion.  Our next president needs to be super-focused on straightening out the colossal problems created by our current Administration.

Just as shameful is our filthy Department of Justice (DOJ), led by political hack Attorney General Merrick Garland.  While throwing every little nook and cranny of the law…and even creating several that don’t exist…against Trump, who happens to be the leading political opponent of his boss, Garland has now thrown off all pretense of ethical service.  He has demonstrated scandalous behavior by choosing partisan Democrat, U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware David C. Weiss, as Special Counsel for the investigation of Hunter Biden…and whoever else Garland allows/or disallows him to investigate.  You see…Weiss works for Garland…who works for Joe Biden.  For over FOUR YEARS, Weiss has been investigating Hunter Biden’s misadventures.  The record clearly reflects he is doing his dead level best to sweep Biden’s legal transgressions under the rug.  Why do I say this?  Three things confirm this statement.

The first is the fact that his façade of the Hunter Biden investigation has been a joke.  He has essentially had unlimited DOJ power and resources since early in 2019 and has yet to bring a single indictment against Biden.  Not one!  Not only that, but his plodding investigation has permitted the statute of limitations to expire on many of Biden’s potential crimes; all of this while the same DOJ has been moving heaven and earth to indict Donald Trump for highly debatable reasons.   The mainstream media point out repeatedly about how Weiss was appointed by Donald Trump.  The simple fact is that Delaware is one of the bluest states in the nation and its two Senators are the ones who selected Weiss; it was about the best Trump and the Republicans could get out that state.  It speaks volumes that Joe Biden decided to leave him on the job while he fired most of the other Trump appointees early in his term.

Secondly, the patently ridiculous plea deal that the DOJ had offered to Hunter Biden was nothing but a Get Out of Jail Free card.  It was so ludicrous that the Judge presiding over the affair openly mocked it and threw it out.  These corrupted people in our DOJ have no shame.

Third and finally…Garland has now appointed Weiss as Special Counsel to investigate Hunter Bide and more that is yet to be determined.  It is a blatant disregard of the law for Garland to ignore the Special Counsel selection requirement that the appointment be someone outside of the governmenthttps://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/28/600.3 .  Weiss has been a part of the government since 2018 and has been investigating the Biden case for over four years.  He has demonstrated that he is in the can for the Bidens, fully intends to slow walk the investigation, and is now being rewarded for his performance by being selected as Special Counsel.  What a joke!

How revealing is it that every time a significant development in the investigation of the Biden Family Enterprises comes out, a new indictment of Donald Trump is announced by the DOJ immediately afterwards.  This Weiss appointment comes immediately after the Comer-led House Oversight Committee reported out more disturbing details about the Biden Family Enterprises and their nefarious operations.

By selecting Weiss for this position, Garland insures that he and Joe Biden will completely control where the investigation leads.  An additional and significant benefit for Garland and the Biden family is the fact that the existence of the Special Counsel investigation will make it far more difficult for the House Oversight Committee to continue their fruitful examination of the Biden Family Enterprises.

Without a doubt, this is the most corrupt and incompetent government that has existed in my lifetime of over 70 years.  Obama still ranks in my book as the worst president I have ever seen, but Biden is becoming an increasingly close second.  His Administration has taken open corruption to levels never before seen.  The hubris of this bunch as they disregard the law, their oaths of office, and simple ethics and morals is despicable.

And as bad as they are, can anyone doubt that if Donald Trump is elected president, he will spend the entirety of his term settling grudges with his numerous political enemies on both sides of the aisle?  For heaven’s sake, how can we possibly improve the government of this country with the selection of either national party’s currently leading candidate as our next president?  People…we HAVE to do better than that!  Now…let’s check out the news………

Of all the foolishness exhibited by the Biden Administration, it is difficult to look at one area where more damage has been done than the energy sector of our nation.  The liberal worship at the altar of climate change threatens the very existence and independence of our country…and there is no indication that they are slowing down their push.

The liberal infection that has taken over our national education system is showing no sign of abatement.  A radical element with no regard for the fundamental education of our youth is in firm control of academia from kindergarten upward and they show no indication of relinquishing that power.  They are responsible for educational stagnation and incompetence that will haunt our nation for generations to come.  Our youth will pay the price.

Joe Biden thinks his economics ish don’t stink; but everyone is smelling it except him.  Unemployment is down because workplace participation is down and millions of people are not even looking for work.  Inflation is not down; the RATE of inflation is down…for now.  Debt is on a rocket ride heading towards the moon.  The deficit is so lopsided towards spending that nobody even cares anymore.  The Democrats solution to every…single…problem…in America is to spend more money on it.  Inflation is outrunning the gain in pay and it is eating into every single American family’s budget.  Public demand, or the lack thereof, for a product or policy has no meaning to the Biden Administration.  If they think something is good, then they will jam it down our throats…regardless of the consequences.

You better believe that the liberal autocrats in our country want to control and censor the information you send, receive, and digest.  These are people who are convinced that THEY know better what is good for you than YOU know for yourself.  The really scary part of it is that they have the wealth, the power, and the influence to get it done.  By controlling the information available to you, these people strive to make sheep of our citizenry.  Wake up, America…or one day soon our individual freedoms and liberties will be gone.

Obama was the poorest excuse for a president in my lifetime.  He was a pathetically-shallow narcissist who viewed the entire universe in his very own reflection.  He would lie when telling the truth was easier; morals and ethics were entirely disposable if they got in his way; and he had no understanding whatsoever…not to mention possession…of principle and integrity.   Is it any wonder that having been in training under this sad clown of a man for eight years, that Joe Biden turned out to what we are witnessing today?  Obama and Biden were/are both lazy, self-aggrandizing fools in love with themselves.  They took, and are taking, the American people for a ride to enrich themselves and their friends.  They were/are a disgrace to the office of the presidency.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has taken disgrace to perhaps the lowest levels in recent…perhaps even long-term…memory.  This disgrace is exhibited in the people that serve within the DOJ, the indictments they choose to file, the indictments they choose not to file, the shameful rhetoric that they so casually throw out to the public on a daily basis, and their complete abdication of duty to the American people they are pledged to serve.  Much has been written about them recently and much of it should be read; disgrace of this magnitude should be exposed for what it is and shouted about to the heavens.
