CenterlineRight: The Cold, Harsh Reality of Elections

We appear to be headed for a rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. Both candidates are recognized by many in their respective parties as severely flawed nominees; but both seem at this point in time to be inexplicably inevitable. The problem with both camps is the fact that all of the resources and energy in both parties are obsessively focused on simply winning the next election. So what … that would seem to be the obvious goal?

Well…actually…that should not be the obvious goal. The essential argument for electing a President should not be their perceived ability to win the election; but rather what exactly they will do when they assume the office. It goes without saying that a primary consideration of selecting a candidate is their ability to win; but have we become so shallow and short-sighted that we focus entirely on winning the election at the expense of considering what the candidate stands for once they are elected? I believe that we have. Think about it…what specific, concrete policy ideals have you heard coming out of the Biden or Trump camps? Nada. They just want to talk about winning and pounding the other guy.

It is obvious that Joe Biden is both mentally and physically incapable of performing his presidential duties today…what in heaven’s name would make anyone think that in fourteen months, he will somehow be much more capable to do so? And even more significant…imagine having to watch this train wreck of a man continue his obvious and demoralizing disintegration as a sentient human being at an increased rate over the following four years.

Large numbers of Republicans are consumed with the goal of electing Donald Trump to the presidency in order to make a political statement and teach the Democrats a lesson for their past election shenanigans, their relentless and near-psychotic pursuit of Trump, and their idiotic policies that have severely damaged our nation in so many ways. But what happens following Election Day if Donald Trump wins? How many of those determined Trump supporters have considered the four years of pure chaos that will ensue as Trump sets about executing a lame-duck presidential term with the self-professed purpose of evening the score with all of his past opponents and enemies…both Democrat and Republican?

Surely…surely…Republicans and Democrats alike can come to their senses before it is too late and pull back from the brink of condemning our nation’s leadership to four more years of geriatric incompetence and chaotic stalemate. If things do not soon change in regards to our upcoming presidential choices, there is going to be one huge, head-splitting hangover arriving a few days following next November’s national election. We will get the government we deserve. Now…on to the news….
