I
want to start February with a shorter version of the blog. I know that my pieces have been growing
ever-larger…but the material is so plentiful.
On this occasion, I will try to size it down a bit and focus on items
that might stimulate some personal introspection on the part of my few
readers. I want you to “Think
About It”.
Before
getting into the real world, however, I would like to visit professional
football (NFL) for a moment. Considering all of the professional sports
leagues with which I am somewhat familiar, not one (with the possible exception of the NBA) has become more woke or
socially-conscious than the NFL. Roger
Goodell is a Trump-level asshole and for the life of me, I cannot figure out
how this man keeps his job. Yet in spite
of all the idiotic virtue-signaling that occurs in the NFL, I continue to watch
it because of the game. It is a weakness
I cannot deny.
I
skip the pre-game, mid-game, and post-game events and talking heads…that helps
a lot. I have disciplined myself to
ignore the shallow, sanctimonious messaging on the back of the helmets and the
playing field surroundings. I have
managed to focus on the athletes and the game and ignore the foolishness that
surrounds them. I suppose that in a
microcosm, this might be a good remedy for living in America in this day and
time.
I
have long been a shameless fan of the GOAT, Tom Brady. I thought for over a decade that I was a New
England Patriots fan; but when Brady left for Tampa Bay, my allegiance went
with him. I won’t get into trying to
build the case for deigning him the GOAT; anyone who wants to argue that point
is obviously beyond reasonable persuasion.
I have mixed feelings about Brady’s apparently-pending retirement. I am glad to see him go out on top with a
great comeback effort in their recent playoff loss to the Rams. He had a great year and did all he could to
get back to the Super Bowl. I also
realize that given the salary cap and free agent issues facing Tampa Bay, they
will likely not be as competitive next year as they were this year. It will be very difficult for him to maintain
his current level of performance.
But
anyone who enjoys professional football for the pure sport that it is will have
to miss the brilliance of Tom Brady’s game.
He was indeed human and made many mistakes; but no player ever competed
more fiercely and everyone knew that his
teams were never out of the game until the clock clicked to zeros. Everyone knew that one of the biggest coaching
errors when playing against Brady was leaving too much time on the clock for him
at the end of the game.
The
NFL has a crop of brilliant young quarterbacks coming up that will make us
quickly forget Tom Brady. That is as it
should be. The game moves on. But is there one amongst them who might step
into the GOAT’s shoes and carry the banner of supreme quarterback into the
future? Is there a Master Executioner in the bunch?
Only time will tell; but I must say that after watching the playoffs
this year (pre Super Bowl), I see the
potential for one player to step up
to that level.
As
I said before, Mahomes with the Chiefs is incredible. Justin Herbert with the Chargers can wing the
ball with Aaron Rogers-like velocity and accuracy. But the one that jumps out at me, the one
that assumes the mantle of team leader with a balance of swagger and
performance that inspires his team mates to new levels; the one that has the
apparent physical attributes to attain and maintain success in the NFL…is Joe
Burrow. The GOAT has left a mountain to
climb that will challenge many aspirants, but keep your eyes on this Cincinnati
kid…he sure looks like the real deal.

about it…Donald Trump created some severe
fractures in NATO with his bluster and lack of diplomacy; but he pulled the
sheet back on some hard truths. Our NATO
allies in Europe were not pulling their weight and taking care of
business. And for all the harping about
Trump being Putin’s puppet, Russia did not mess with its neighbors nor rattle its
sabers because first off, it did not know what to expect from Trump and
secondly…it honestly believed that he meant what he said. Now…how
are our relations with NATO and Russia today?

about it…Isn’t it amazing that the Democrats
celebrate the huge success of the 2020 elections, even with all the questions
surrounding its problems and irregularities, and yet are so very concerned
about the fairness of the upcoming 2022 elections in which they are likely to
take a beating? What the Democrats are seeking to do through their voting
rights legislation (linked below) is
institutionalize the types of 2020 election abuses that are chronicled in the
Mollie Hemingway book (linked below). They are brazenly trying to remove the
Constitutional authority for state-run elections from the state legislatures
and place that authority with Congress.
Why? Because many state legislatures have passed new laws that will prohibit
such abuses in future elections.

cottage industry has grown up around the shutdown tactics being employed by
